A randomized controlled trial to compare the use of homeopathy and internal Teat Sealers for the prevention of mastitis in organically farmed dairy cows during the dry period and 100 days post-calving. Organic Eprints
Klocke, P.; Ivemeyer, S.; Butler, G.; Maeschli, A.; Heil, F..
Introduction: Routine use of antibiotics to prevent mastitis in dairy cows is prohibited by organic farming regulations. Internal Teat Sealers have been proposed as an alternative. We compared two drying-off (DO) supporting measures (Internal Teat Sealer and Homeopathy) to an untreated control group to assess their protective effects against clinical mastitis and intra-mammary infections during dry period of dairy cows. Methods: A field trial with 102 dairy cows from 13 Swiss organic dairy farms was conducted. Cows were randomly assigned to one of three groups within a herd. In the Internal Teat Sealer group (ITS; 36 cows) cows were treated with the commercial ORBESEAL (Pfizer) in all four quarters immediately after the last milking. In the Homeopathy...

A reforma agrária no segundo mandato de Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Organic Eprints

A review of farm-scale nutrient budgets for organic farms as a tool for management of soil fertility Organic Eprints
Watson, C.A.; Bengtsson, H.; Ebbesvik, M.; Loes, A-K.; Myrbeck, A.; Salomon, E.; Schroder, J.; Stockdale, E.A..
On organic farms, where the importation of materials to build/maintain soil fertility is restricted, it is important that a balance between inputs and outputs of nutrients is achieved to ensure both short-term productivity and long-term sustainability. This paper considers different approaches to nutrient budgeting on organic farms and evaluates the sources of bias in the measurements and/or estimates of the nutrient inputs and outputs. The paper collates 88 nutrient budgets compiled at the farm scale in 9 temperate countries. All the nitrogen (N) budgets showed an N surplus (average 83.2 kg N ha-1 year-1). The efficiency of N use, defined as outputs/inputs, was highest (0.9) and lowest (0.2) in arable and beef systems respectively. The phosphorus (P) and...

A row cropping system with cover crops for balancing weed and soil fertility management in organic cereal production Organic Eprints
Phan, Hong TT; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
This manuscript shows the result from testing the new row cropping system for its ability to produce a balanced combination of inter-row hoeing and undersown cover crop in order to obtain a sufficient N supply and an effective weed control as well as to identify optimal sowing time for high biomass production and cover crop species suited for late undersowing. The new system produced a sufficient N supply and an acceptable weed control effect, leading to an improvement in the subsequent crop yield. Yield in this system is potentially improved further because some managements are suggested to increase its weed control effect, especially for the perennial creeping thistle cirsium arvense.

A scale to measure attitude of registered organic farmers towards organic livestock farming Organic Eprints
Bodapati, Subrahmanyeswari; Chander, Mahesh.
Organic farming an innovative area gaining importance worldwide and became a boon to the areas which are organic by default and far from the reach of green revolution technologies. Uttarakhand state in India, where most of its farming is organic by default, promoting organic farming in a systematic way through creation of special institutions like UOCB. As attitudes assist individuals in processing complex information and to make decisions, an instrument has been developed to measure attitude of organic farmers towards organic livestock farming, for which ‘Likert method of summated ratings’ was followed. A total of 102 statements were developed from the subject matter of organic animal husbandry standards, worked out by the Ministry of Commerce and...

A sequential approach for improving AZODYN crop model under conventional and low-input conditions Organic Eprints
David, Christophe; Jeuffroy, Marie-Hélène.
Advances in scientific understanding of the plant and soil behaviour in a cultivated field led to the design of numerous soil-crop models simulating crop growth. The frequent low predictive quality of these models is linked to uncertainties in inputs, parameters and equations. The AZODYN crop model predicting wheat grain yield and grain protein content was previously developed to support decision for N management of conventional and organic wheat crops. This paper outlines a sequential approach to improve the predictions of the AZODYN model by testing various formalisms. This study is based on the comparison of 38 versions of the model assessed in multi-environment trials carried out under conventional or low-input conditions. This paper describes and...

A simple biodiversity assessment scheme supporting nature-friendly farm management Organic Eprints
Tasser, Erich; Rüdisser, Johannes; Plaikner, Michaela; Wezel, Alexander; Stöckli, Sibylle; Vincent, Audrey; Nitsch, Heike; Dubbert, Monika; Moos, Valerie; Walde, Janette; Bogner, Daniel.
Farmers are important actors for regional development and biodiversity protection. Agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) are therefore a central tool of the European Union to support its biodiversity conservation policy. AECM generally reward farmers for fulfilling predefined management actions or avoiding specific practices. In contrast, result oriented AECM are intended to reward farmers for the outcome of nature friendly management practices. This approach gives more flexibility in management and hence promotes farmers engagement and autonomy. Besides educational activities and agricultural advisory services farmers need user friendly tools to assess biodiversity in order to meet result oriented AECM. Thus, we present a biodiversity assessment scheme...

A Simulation Model of Combined Biogas, Bioethanol and Protein Fodder Co-Production in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Oleskowicz-Popiel, Piotr; Thomsen, Mette Hedegaard; Thomsen, Anne Belinda; Schmidt, Jens Ejbye.
In order to evaluate new strategies for the production of renewable energy within sustainable organic agriculture, a process-simulation model for a 100 ha organic farm was developed. Data used for the model was obtained from laboratory trials, literature data, consultancy with experts, and results from the BioConcens project (http://www.bioconcens.elr.dk). Different design approaches were evaluated in order to establish the most suitable configuration. Rye grains, clover grass silage, maize silage, whey and cattle manure were selected as raw materials for co-production of fuels, feed and fertilizer at the organic farm, based on the fact that crops grown in organic agriculture act as key carbon sources whereas manure and whey were applied primarily as the...

A sustainability assessment of organic and conventional beef cattle farms in agroforestry systems: the case of the dehesa rangelands Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Pulido, A.F.; Escribano, M..
Pasture-based livestock systems are a key element for the maintenance of the dehesa ecosystem. However, adaptative changes (mainly intensification) are reducing their sustainability. As a consequence, sustainable livestock systems must be found and implemented. Due to this, this work assesses the sustainability of 63 beef cattle farms (including organic and conventional ones) with two aims: (i) to identify the most sustainable systems and; (ii) to establish management measures in order to increase farms sustainability. For this purpose, a methodological adaptation of the MESMIS Framework was applied. A cluster analysis allowed us to identify three farms typologies. Typology 1 (organic farms) had the highest scores for the sustainability index (66.75%) and...

A universal simulator for ecological models Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels.
To most modellers, ecological models are primarily about ecology. A model is a condensed summary of an ecosystem written in the language of mathematics and logic. While modellers with a mathematical inclination may prefer stringent model formulations, that allow formal mathematical analysis, most modellers in ecology prefer heterogeneus, composite models permitting only numerical analysis; they are computational modellers who implement their models in software, which then itself becomes both tool and object in the ensuing analysis. The design and implementation details of this software is largely neglected. But this paper is only about this: the proper design and implementaion of ecological models.

A weed suppressive index for spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties Organic Eprints
Hansen, Preben Klarskov; Willas, Jakob; Kristensen, Kristian.
A screening programme for crop variety competitiveness would ideally be based on only a few, non-destructive measurements of key growth traits. In this study we measured the weed suppressive ability of 79 varieties of spring barley in two ways: 1) directly, by weed coverage assessments under weedy conditions at three Danish locations in 2002-2004, and 2) indirectly, by non-destructive measurements of varietal growth traits under weed-free conditions in 17 other experiments in Denmark in 2001-2003. Based on just four varietal growth traits (reflectance, leaf area index, leaf angle and culm length), we successfully developed a method for indexing the weed suppressive ability of spring barley varieties. The suppressive index ranged from 12% in ‘Lux’ and 55%...

A World Map of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Paull, John; Hennig, Benjamin.
This paper presents a world map of organic agriculture. A Gall-Peters projection map of the world is taken as the reference map (where map areas are proportional to territorial areas). Applying the area of organic agriculture to countries, the World Map of Organic Agriculture presents countries as proportional in size to their share of the total of world organic hectares (such a map can be referred to as an equal-area cartogram or a densityequalising map). The World Map of Organic Agriculture accounts for 37.2 million hectares of organically managed agricultural land (certified organic and in-conversion organic) from 160 countries, and here distributed across the 200 territories of the reference map. The World Map of Organic Agriculture visually reveals...

Abatement costs for agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus loads: a case study of crop farming in south-western Finland Organic Eprints
Helin, Janne; Laukkanen, Marita; Koikkalainen, Kauko.
Designing efficient agri-environmental policies for agricultural nutrient load reductions calls for information on the costs of emission reduction measures. This study develops an empirical framework for estimating abatement costs for nutrient loading from agricultural land. Nitrogen abatement costs and the phosphorus load reductions associated with nitrogen abatement are derived for crop farming in south-western Finland. The model is used to evaluate the effect of the Common Agricultural Policy reform currently underway on nutrient abatement costs. Results indicate that an efficiently designed policy aimed at a 50% reduction in agricultural nitrogen load would cost € 48 to € 35 million, or € 3756 to € 2752 per farm.

Abenteuer regionale Bio-Gastronomie - Mit Frische und Herzblut neue Gäste gewinnen Organic Eprints
Braun, Philipp; Kreuzer, Sepp; Bartel-Kratochvil, Ruth; Leitner, Heidrun.

Laber, H.; Baumgarten, B.; Stützel, H.; Wonneberger, C..

Above- and belowground nitrogen distribution of a red clover-perennial ryegrass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient established by organic and conventional cropping systems Organic Eprints
Hammelehle, Andreas; Oberson, Astrid; Lüscher, Andreas; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen.
Aims Belowground legume nitrogen (N) composed of roots and rhizodeposition is an important N input to soils, but published data of belowground N vary broadly, probably due to extrapolation from short-term experiments and dissimilar growing conditions. We quantified belowground N inputs of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) during two consecutive years in a clover-grass sward along a soil nutrient availability gradient. Methods We established a red clover-perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) model sward in microplots located in field plots of the DOK experiment, which has a 33-year history of organic and conventional cropping, resulting in a soil nutrient availability gradient. Four treatments were examined: the zero fertilisation control, bio-organic...
